History

Koinonia Patan Church, today stands in the glorious 35 years since its establishment in the year 1978. KPC is the mother of 69 daughter churches with 15,000 believers and over 5500 baptized members. What we are today is all by the Grace of God and without the guidance of His Spirit this would not have been prevalent.

It is always very humbling experience to look back that how this church came to its being and it is mesmerizing .The great seed of this church began in the year 1974 with a small Bible Group Study at Mr. Adon Rongong's sitting room, at Patan Book House, Mahapal, Lalitpur comprising of Mr. Surya Prasad Acharya, Mr Ram Chandra Timothy, Mr. Lal Bahadur Gauchan, Mr. Prakash Subba, Mr. Sahadev Mahat and Mr. Mangal Man Maharjan who met regularly at the Bible Study. The movement had begun impacting the local people and addition of Mr. Kaji Ratna Maharjan, Mr. Bhim Lal Maharjan, Mr. Mangal Lal Maharjan and Mr. Dilip Rai to the group in 1975. In 1977, the group had 40 believers who attended the study regularly and attended Nepal Isai Mandali,(NIM) Gyaneshwor.

In May 1978, this small group transformed into the church which was later named as Patan Church in conjunction with NIM Gyaneshwor. Since then regular Saturday services were held. Mr. Mangal Man Maharjan was also a deacon of NIM Gyaneshwor at that time. In the mean time, KPC had 85 baptized members and 65 regular members. In 1981, Mr. Mangal Man Maharjan was sent for higher studies at International School of Theology which is now named as International Graduate School of Leadership (IGSL) in Philippines. He completed his M Div (Master of Divinity in the year 1984. In the initiation of NIM Gyaneshwor and the local believers fund was raised and a land was purchased in 1981 where the present church building exists. The growth of the church continued thus with consultation with Pastor Robert Karthak and Elder Deacon board, NIM prayerfully handed over the responsibilities to Deacon Adon Rongong and Deacon M.S. Rana to shepherd and nurture the growing Patan church and Patan church became an independent church in 1982.

Mr. Adon Rongong took on the role of the acting Pastor and handled all the church responsibilities with the team comprising of Mr. Om Prakash Subba, Mr. Kaji Ratna Maharjan, Mr. Sahadev Mahat and Mr. Abraham K.C.. Later, Deacon M.S. Rana decided to serve at NIM Gyaneshwor and as a result, the fellowships, services and all the church activities were looked after under the leadership of Deacon Adon Rongong. He started baptizing and leading other believers into maturity including Mr. Radhe Shyam Shrestha (Elder of KPC currently).

The churches in Nepal started getting persecuted by the Government of Nepal from 1983 onwards, and in the month of August, the present acting Chief District Officer (CDO) ordered to shut the Patan Church at Mahapal. Therefore, the fellowship was dispersed at different residences such as; Bailachein (Mr. Mangal Man Maharjan), Machaga (Mr. Kaji Ratna Maharjan), Lagankhel (Miss. Eileen's rented room), Tutepani (Nepal Leprosy Trust (NLTSatdobato (Mr.Gopal K.C. and Mr. Tirtha Thapa's rented room). Combined Weekly Fellowship and monthly Holy Communion were held at the Church building of Putalisadak. In August 1983, Mr. Adon Rongong was taken into custody by the Government of Nepal on the pretext of preaching and proselytization and later others were also taken into custody; Mr. Sahadev Mahat and Mr. Abraham K.C. Despite of the circumstances, the fellowship and fervent prayers of the believers continued which resulted in the addition of more believers.

All the believers felt the need for the church building as the church was growing in increasing number thus towards the end of the year 1983, the work began for the building of the church. To raise the operating costs believers started contributing jewelry, watch, gold ring, monthly income and some brought their year's harvest as there were farmers too. The building (Ground floor) was ready in 1984 and it was dedicated to the Lord by Pastor Robert Karthak. At the time, Mr. Mangal Man Maharjan returned after the completion of his degree.

The believers continued to grow thus the full time Pastor was the necessity of the church. After prolonged prayer and intercession Mangal Man Maharjan was ordained as the Pastor in March 1985 by Pastor Robert Karthak, Pastor Nicanor Tamang and Mr. Adon Rongong. In 1986, Mr. Om Prakash Subba was ordained Elder while Mr. Kaji Ratna Maharjan, Mr. Sahadev Mahat, Mr. Abraham K.C. and Mr. Radhe Shyam Shrestha were ordained Deacons. The acting Pastor Adon Rongong handed over all the responsibilities to the newly ordained Pastor Mangal Man Maharjan and himself humbly accepted descended to Deaconship to serve the church.

September 1987, Pastor Mangal Man Maharjan was sent to Seoul, Korea for further theological studies at Asian Center for Theological Studies and Mission. In his absence Mr. Om Prakash Subba carried out all the responsibilities of the church. Dr. Mangal Man Maharjan received his M.Th. & Doctorate degree and returned in December 1989 and regained the church's responsibilities and duties. In1988, Mr. Bhim Lal Maharjan, Mr. Tirtha Thapa and Mr. Magal Lal Maharjan were ordained Deacons.

In 1991, new committee was formed under the leadership of Mr. Ram Chandra Timothy, Mr. Surya Prasad Acharya, Mr. Tirtha Thapa and Mr. Damodar Sharma to prepare the Constitution and Policy of the church. In 1992, the Constitution was prepared and read out at the church and was put to application. Most possibly, it could be the first ever policy in the church history. Similarly Patan Church opened daughter and granddaughter churches thus the constitution and policy needed re-amendment. Keeping this in mind, in 1998 under the leadership of Mr. Ram Chandra Timothy,a sub -committee was formed with Mr. Surya Prasad Acharya, Mr. Brahma Shakya and Mr. Chatra Bahadur Subba. This amendment gave impetus to spreading the gospel in order to establish churches, serving humanity, leading all members spiritually, creating fraternity, developing unity and warmth among the members, and bringing into effect the spiritual responsibility of the church. In 1999 the amended constitution was presented at General Assembly by Mr. Ram Chandra Timothy. Thus, all the church's activities are run according to the amended constitution.

In 1998, Mr. Ram Prasad Shrestha, Mr. Janardan Tripathi, Mr. Brahma Shakya were ordained Deacons of the church. In 2000, Mr. Bed Bahadur Baniya , Mr. Chatra Bahadur Subba, Mr. Bijay Karmacharya and Mr. Kamal Narayan Shrestha were ordained Deacons of the church. In 2002, Mr. Sher Bahadur A.C., Mr. Bhai Gopal Maharjan, Mr. Shyam Kaji Awale and Mr. Chakra Lal Maharjan were ordained Deacons while Deacons: Radhe Shyam Shrestha, Abraham K.C., Bhim Lal Maharjan, Bed Baniya, Bijay Karmacharya and Kamal Narayan Shrestha were ordained as Elders, and Om Prakash Subba was ordained the Assistant Pastor. .
